"PRISEURS"
Pichet
représentant un personnage en train de priser et dont le
chapeau en forme de tricorne sert de bec verseur . Ce type de pichet
est également nommé "fillpot", les deux noms venant de
Toby Fillpot, personnage enivré cité dans la chanson
"little brown jug" datant du 18e siècle . Populaire en
Angleterre et aux USA, le Toby Jug est devenu une pièce de
collection.
SNUFF TAKER TOBY JUGS
Toby jug ,
small pottery pitcher or mug modeled in the form of a jolly, stout
man wearing a cocked hat, a corner of which serves as pourer. The jug
is also called fillpot, both names taken from Toby Fillpot, inebriate
character in the 18th-century song "Little Brown Jug". Popular in
England and America of that day, the toby jug has become a
collector's piece.

Welsh Snuff Taker toby jug and creamer.
"Gaudy Welsh is a generic term
applied to pottery and porcelain brightly hand-decorated in cobalt
blue, burnt orange, red and green sometimes with other colours such
as pinkish lustre, turquoise, grey, or yellows and mauves, sometimes
also highlighted with gold gilding. It was produced in a great
variety of "patterns" and probably developed from Imari-style wares
around 1820. It is similar to Gaudy Dutch and was produced in a large
number of potteries, especially those in Staffordshire".

coloured trousers and coat taking snuff, not noticing the red spider
sat on his nose. He is shown leaning against a tree trunk which forms
the handle of the jug.
The piece is marked with the
initials 'VR' to the underside, next to a cross hatched mark. 11
inches high.
